Spring in Devon

Home | Blog | Uncategorised | Spring in Devon

Aren’t we all ready for that Spring sunshine when Winter finally ends?  What could be better than a perfect break away in South Devon to enjoy this wonderful time of the year!  With the South Devon microclimate, there is so much to do (lot’s that cost nothing!), so let’s take a look at things to do: –

Go on a bike ride

Devon is made for cycling, with its network of cycle paths and beautiful scenery. A short drive down to Exmouth or Dawlish takes you to the Exe Estuary trail which is virtually traffic free and surfaced throughout for easy cycling.  You can’t beat the views on the way, or a pit stop pint at one of the pubs along the route. For more information and details of popular routes along the Grand Western Canal, the Stover Trail, and the Dart Valley Cycleway, please visit: –

Take a trip to the National Trust properties

Many National Trust properties close over the Winter, so when the houses open for visits in the Spring, it’s a great time to discover the preserved history of these glorious buildings and wonderful gardens.  A great example is Greenaway near Brixham, a house set in the 1950’s where Agatha Christie and her family spend many happy times.

The Georgian house you see today was built in the late 18th century for a successful sea merchant.  In the garden, there is a large and romantic woodland that drifts down the hillside towards the Dart estuary with stunning views.  The walled gardens are home to a restored peach house and vinery, along with an allotment cared for by local school children.

Explore the moors
Dartmoor is alive with activity in Spring.  Gaze at the famous ponies grazing together, join a cuckoo fact trail, expl ore a Devon longhouse, or visit the Warren Inn with the fire that has been burning since 1845.

Visit the National Aquarium and Plymouth Gin Distillery
Plymouth has so much to offer, from shopping, restaurants, boat trips, the Hoe and Royal William Yard.

Why not visit the UK’s largest Aquarium and be fascinated by an underwater world, taking you on a journey from the shores of Plymouth Sound to the coral reefs of the tropics of Australia. With over 4,000 animals to meet including sharks, stingrays, octopuses and jelly fish, there is something different on every visit.

How about a pitstop at Plymouth Gin, the oldest distillery in England!  Take a tour of this Black Friar’s building dating back to the early 1400’s, one of the oldest buildings in Plymouth and protected as a precious national monument.  It is now an important centre of excellence for gin cocktail making.

The Black Friar’s building dates back to the early 1400s.The most intact part of the distillery is the Refectory Room, a medieval hall with a fine hull-shaped timber roof built in 1431 where the latest gin trends are served from the bar.

See the springtime flowers
What better way to see in Spring than watching the springtime booms! We recommend visiting Killerton, Broadclyst this 18th century property really comes to life in the spring, with many different places to enjoy seasonal flowers. Don’t miss Ashclyst Forest – one of the largest woods in east Devon and a great place to spot bluebells – the Plains with its carpet of daffodils, and Front Park, where the cattle-cropped grass is dotted with lesser celandine.

See the baby animals
What represents springtime more than the new life that is born! A must for kids and adults alike is a trip to Pennywell farm, where you can collect the morning eggs, go on a tractor ride and the see baby farm animals like lambs, ponies and calfs. You can even have baby piggie cuddles (trust us you won’t want to put them down)!
There is also a lovely café there.

We could go on and on, as there is so much that South Devon has to offer in the Spring time!
