Steeped in seafaring history Plymouth is a stunning city in a beautiful waterfront setting. Sandwiched between the rugged landscape of Dartmoor and the incredible South West coastline there is something for everyone.
With a vast array of shopping, arts, vibrant nightlife, top notch restaurants and entertainment Plymouth has everything you are looking for in a holiday destination. With the water surrounding Plymouth Sound, the marina is the ideal location for an array of water activities from sailing to canoeing, water-skiing to windsurfing, give it a go!
It is the perfect destination for a long or short break and here is how we recommend spending 48 hours in Plymouth.
Day One
After arriving and checking into one our holiday apartments there is time for you to unpack and unwind before the evening. If you chose to stay at Elliot Terrace, we recommend you book an apartment with a balcony so you can enjoy a glass of fizz on the balcony overlooking the sea before heading out! Drakes Wharf is set in the most perfect location with a number of eateries nearby.
For your first evening in Plymouth, we recommend that a few cocktails and a nice meal out are in order! There is an abundance of eateries offering everything from Indian to French to the array of restaurants offering locally caught seafood. However, a personal favourite of ours is Positano – a family run traditional Italian restaurant located on the historic Barbican. Starters start from £6 and main curses from £12, there is a wide range of pizza, pasta and meat dishes. As you would expect the wine menu compliments the food choice and choses only the best Italian wines.
After your meal it is time to head out for a few drinks and take in the surrounding views of the Barbican. A few favourite bars (that serves excellent cocktails!), include The Barbican Botanics Gin Room, Bar Rukda, The Ship Inn to name but a few. Many bars in this area are well worth a visit and the majority offer a outside seating area overlooking Sutton harbour.
Day Two
Hopefully you’ll wake up to some fabulous weather, ready for a fun packed day! The only way to start the day off is with a hearty breakfast and we recommend breakfast at Secco Lounge at Royal William Yard. The menu offers everything from full English to pastries to new modern favourites like avocado on toast!
A great way to start the day would be to do a bit of shopping in the city centre. Home to a wide range of modern and high street shops, from M&S to Primark to Next, this metropolis is a must for any shopper. The indoor shopping centre at Drakes Circus is the best place to start!
After a spot of lunch what better way to explore the area than on foot to be sure to make the most of the sites and not miss anything. The best place to explore is the historic Barbican and Hoe. With its narrow-cobbled streets, over 200 Tudor and Jacobean Houses and old-world vibes the Barbican is a beautiful part of Plymouth to visit. There are plenty of eateries and independent shops to explore, along with fantastic views of Sutton Harbour. The Hoe is the natural heart of Plymouth with
breath-taking views across the sound. The vast open space and unspoilt landscape have remained unchanged over the years. Standing on the Hoe you feel a sense of its history everyone from Sir Francis Drake, Charles Darwin, Sir Winston Churchill to the Beatles have all been here. Points of interest here are Smeatons Tower, Royal Citadel, Tinside Lido Outdoor Pool.
This evening we recommend a visit to Barcode a newly developed £53 million entertainment venue with a Cineworld, Paradise Island Indoor Golf & plenty of brand-named eateries.
Day Three
Why not head across the water to Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park. Covering over 865 acres and 17.9km of coastline it is the earliest landscaped park in Cornwall. This impressive estate offers a great way for visitors to soak up the incredible views of Plymouth Sound in the grounds of the famous historic house.
Then it is time to head home and back to reality (or back for a rest)!
