With South Devon’s mild climate and exotic style plants, this beautiful part of England is one of the country’s most beautiful and visited spots. The county has a temperate maritime climate with typically warm rather than hot summers and cool to cold winters. Devon rarely experiences very extreme weather meaning Devon can be visited throughout the year.
Devon has an oceanic climate. It is a bit warmer than in the rest of England, you can even find palm trees in some areas. Although the temperature remains very mild well into autumn, there is like in the rest of the UK a lot of rain. It can often be foggy on the open plains and the weather is very changeable. A rainy-day inland Devon may have turned into a sunny afternoon upon arrival on the coast!
Here are some facts about the weather in South Devon:
- The months of January, October, November and December have a high chance of precipitation.
- December is the most wet month in Devon. This month should be avoided if you are not a big fan of rain.

Here is a snapshot of the different seasons and what they can offer you:
Spring
The climate is milder in spring making it a good time to visit Devon. There can be some great sunny days mixed with cooler and wet weather. Spring is a good time to visit if visitors prefer the weather mild to warm and offers an alternative to visiting in peak summer. From March to May the average daytime temperatures are between 10°C and 16°C. Our recommendation in the Spring time is to take a boat trip where you can marvel in the scenery as you pass by the many coves and maybe even spot a dolphin!
Summer
Most days in summer range from mild to warm with the possibility of some infrequent hotter days, the days are at their longest in the summer. There may be overcast and humid conditions in the summer. The average temperature between June and August is between 21°C to 23°C, making for pleasant summer temperatures. Our recommendation in the Summer is of course to have a beach day and Torbay has no fewer than 20 beaches on offer from sand to pebble, there is something to offer everyone. Why not give a water sport a go!
Autumn
The climate can vary from some pleasantly mild days particularly at the start of September to cooler and colder days in October and November. Autumn is a good time to visit Devon as it avoids the peak summer tourist season, where Devon with its fine beaches, scenery and countryside is very popular among visitors whilst still having milder temperatures and longer hours of daylight particularly at the start of September. Visitors can see some wonderful autumn colours. From September to November the average daytime temperatures are between 11°C and 18°C. Our recommendation in the Autumn is to take a walk along the South West Coast Path. The longest of England’s national trails, it offers 630 miles of stunning coastal walking.
Winter
The days are at their shortest and the temperature at the coolest, the days can be crisp and clear therefore if visitors do not mind the cold, you can enjoy visiting Devon in winter. There is the small possibility of snowfall during this time (especially over the moorland) and it can get cold so visitors are advised to bring warm winter clothing. From December to February the average daytime temperatures are between 8°C and 9°C. Our recommendation in the Winter is to wrap up and venture out to see one of the numerous Christmas markets and twinkling Christmas lights.
