Autumn in Devon

Home | Blog | Uncategorised | Autumn in Devon

With mild temperatures, uncrowded beaches and stunning autumnal colours Devon is a beautiful place to visit in Autumn. If you’re lucky enough to be visiting during this period then you’re in for a treat.

Our guide to Autumn in South Devon handpicks a selection of country pubs, dog friendly beaches, walking, festivals and much more so read on to find out more……

Sub-Tropical Climate

The first thing we have to mention is the sub-tropical climate of Devon. As a general rule the weather in Devon in autumn is usually better than any other time of year. The rain falls less, the clouds’ part more and the sun usually has his hat on. You still get warm sunny days and it’s not unusual for the temperature to hit the low 20’s even at the beginning of October!
If you are ‘lucky’ enough to visit Devon when it is stormy you are in for a treat! Lucky, we hear you say? Well yes, the majestic and wild waves that roar in over the sands are a sight to behold – but please always remember to keep a safe distance when mother nature calls!

Bonfire night

Bonfire night is no ordinary bonfire night in Devon. In Ottery Saint Mary men and women run with flaming barrels of tar on their backs through the streets. This adrenaline fuelled night is fun and filled with mulled wine, what more could you want?

Dog Friendly Beaches

Not many beaches in summer are not dog friendly, but beaches in autumn are dog friendly, meaning that you can go for a stroll with your pooch without having to worry. The sandy shores provide the perfect playground for your pooch and with the crowds of summer a distant memory and the water at this time of year still warm too, you can even go for a swim together! Some of the best South Devon beaches include Goodrington Sands, South Milton Sands, Bigbury and Preston Beach. All summer restrictions end on the 30th September, so if visiting before then please check what beaches accept dogs all year round.

Walking

South Devon is a walker’s paradise and boasts a myriad of walking routes that cross the county spanning coast, countryside, and open moorland. Home to an abundance of wildlife, historical landmarks and incredible views, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy an autumn walk.
Dartmoor is ablaze during the autumn months and one of our favourite Dartmoor walks leads through Wistman’s Wood, which is steeped in myth and legend, and is especially atmospheric on a grey, moody autumn day.
For a wonderful woodland walk that takes in all the spectacular colours of Autumn we recommend the walk at Parke near Bovey Tracy.
If the skies are blue, head to the coast which is spectacular in the autumn light. With the tourists gone leaving Devon empty and tranquil all over again explore the coast paths and beaches it can often make you feel as though you have the whole beach to yourself. And with less people around to ruin your view you are bound to get those perfect holiday snaps!

Country Pubs

Nothing says autumn more than a roaring fire in a country pub and in Devon we have an abundance of these! Many serving local craft ales on tap and hearty meals using where possible locally sourced Devon produce, they are the perfect place to gather with friends and family.
Try the Treby Arms at Plymouth, The Drum Inn at Cockington (lots of perfect walks here to) or the Coppa Dolla at Broadhempston home of the famous 2 in 1 pie!

Beachside Cafes

If you would rather snuggle down in a cosy beach café and watch the elements, then you are spoilt for choice in Devon. Sit back and enjoy a decadent hot chocolate with lashings of cream and marshmallows, and for the grown-ups, why not treat yourselves to an additional shot of baileys or rum! Personally, we recommend the Breakwater Bistro at Brixham (you may even see the local seal), The Sea Shanty Beach Café in Seaton or Bo’s Beach Café at Salcombe.

Food Festivals

If you like food, you do not want to miss out on these food festivals, with many offering many free samples of local food and drink! There’s Brixham Fishstock, Taste of the Teign, Abbfest Beer and Food Festival, Exe Mussel Festival, Powderham Food Festival and Plymouth Seafood Festival all in September and October brings Oktoberfest and Dartmouth Food Festival. Pack yourself a bigger pair of trousers and see what delights await you!

Other Festivals

There are also a ton of other festivities to draw you to Devon in autumn. For walking, you can join the South Devon, North Devon or Exmoor Walking Festival, and music fans will enjoy the Two Moors Festival which brings together a series of classical music concerts across both Dartmoor and Exmoor. Book lovers will need to make their way to Torbay for crime writer Agatha Christie Festival which takes place in locations all over the English Riviera in September. For water lovers there’s
The National Sailing Championship takes place in Torbay in September.
