While restrictions may be lifting, confidence for venturing outside the UK is going to take longer to bounce back. Luckily, Devon offers the loveliest staycation for those looking for a wholesome escape to enjoy the sought-after combination of beaches, countryside and local restaurants. We have rounded up our favourite places to eat and drink in Torbay to whet your appetite once hospitality is open, all within a short driving distance from your Torquay holiday rental.
If an afternoon tea is your… cup of tea, visit Angels. But remember to put the cream on first, that’s how the Devonians do it! Babbacombe offers a spectacular setting for an uninterrupted view of the coastline. Choose to sit in the outside area surrounded by flowers and bunting, or inside with the angels and quintessential English tea-room atmosphere. We recommend the Angelic Full Tea if you’re looking to indulge in heavenly warm scones, homemade cakes and freshly-filled sandwiches. Put it this way, you won’t need a dinner reservation that night!
If you’re coming to Devon, fish and chips is a priority! We have picked Rockfish as the go-to, as not only is it the best fish and chips in the bay, but you can pick it up from three locations (Torquay, Brixham and Dartmouth) depending on where you are that day. Enjoy a taste of the South West, whether it be oysters, sole, or the classic cod and chips in a paper box with your legs dangling over the harbourside.
River Shack, Stoke Gabriel
If you’re looking for an idyllic spot to sip a coffee overlooking the mill pond, an ice cream after crabbing, or a gin and tonic following water activities on the River Dart, the River Shack will hit the spot! We may be bias, as this is our hometown, but the warm service and mellow atmosphere make for a relaxing break for anyone seeking calm and comfort in a waterside destination.
Riverford Field Kitchen, Buckfastleigh
With the fresh food box trend ever on the rise, you may already recognise the Riverford brand. Alongside these delicious fruit and vegetable boxes, their crowning glory sits between Buckfastleigh and Totnes on their farm. The Field Kitchen offers a charming barn-style restaurant with long shared tables so you can meet new people while getting stuck into creative new foods. The premise is organic and seasonal food, so the daily changing menu reflects what’s growing on the farm at the time. Get to know your table, tuck in family style and remember to save room for the unrivalled deserts at the end!
Curious Kitchen, Brixham
The millennials of Torbay were jumping for joy when this health conscious brunch place opened, offering equally instagrammable and yummy food. We’re talking smashed avo, shakshouka, colourful smoothies, organic sourdough and gourmet doughnuts for those with a sweet tooth. The Curious Kitchen is accommodating all dietary requirements, offering a myriad of vegan and gluten free options so you can indulge without the bloat!
If you’re in the colourful fishing town of Brixham, you must head to Hennessey’s for a cocktail with a view. Perched on the harbour with panoramic views of the sea, rainbow houses and quaint fishing boats. The energetic staff, live music and endless cocktail options offer a fantastic place to sip on your favourite cocktail in the midst of the Brixham buzz. Stroll around the cobbled streets to soak up the character of the town full of arts, crafts and a pirate ship!
As you drive into Totnes, the welcome sign reads ‘Totnes, twinned with Narnia’ which gives you a good idea of the eclectic nature of the quirky town! Named after the infamous Fleetwood Mac album, Rumour restaurant and wine bar is a great example of a restaurant that champions few things well. If you’re looking for a locally sourced pizza that you can build from scratch and wash down with good wine, look no further. We recommend their Sunday night offer of 2 Rump Steaks with fries, salad and a carafe of wine for £32.95, for a great value date night in an intimate setting.
STAY AT HOME
Perhaps when lockdown lifts, staying at home is something you realise you enjoy more than going out. If you have had a busy day exploring the bay and just want to wind down, there’s always the option of cooking in at your self catered apartment while you watch the sun go down. All apartments are kitted out with everything you need to prepare a delicious home cooked meal.
